Red snapper off the Alabama Gulf Coast weigh from 5 pounds to well over 20 pounds sometimes topping the scales over 30 pounds. These fish are caught from 30 feet of water to over 200 feet of water. Some of the best baits to entice a red snapper to bite is squid, dead or live cigar minnows, live pinfish and actually just about any kind of live or dead bait. Some anglers enjoy fishing with artificial baits such as jigs, grubs, metal jigs or others. Red snapper fishing charters are usually 6 hour, 8 hour, 10 hour or 12 hour in length. Many of the larger red snapper are found offshore where there is less fishing pressure. However, there are still red snapper caught within 15-20 miles of the shoreline. This kind of fishing is popular among experienced anglers, first time anglers, families and kids.
